EliteBook thermal budget: same tuning, much less headroom

  1. Hypothesis

A lot of the tuning discussed here is developed on ZBook hardware with a workstation cooling solution. Applying the same changes to a thin EliteBook is not obviously safe, because the constraint is different.

Hypothesis: on the thinner chassis, changes that raise sustained processor residency will convert directly into fan noise and throttling rather than throughput, because the cooling solution reaches its limit sooner. Nobody here has tested this side by side yet.

If that is right, the useful EliteBook tuning is mostly about removing unnecessary background work rather than allowing more sustained work.

  2. Documented fact

That framing is consistent with how the published work is structured. The changes that survived validation are overwhelmingly of the "stop doing unnecessary work" kind rather than the "push the hardware harder" kind.

It remains a hypothesis for EliteBook specifically until someone runs it on both chassis with the same procedure.
