Does the dock cost you performance, and how would you tell?

  1. Hypothesis

Docked, my machine drives two external displays, charges, and carries network and peripherals over one connection. It also sits closed on a stand with reduced airflow.

Hypothesis: any measured docked-versus-undocked difference on this machine is mostly the closed-lid thermal condition rather than the dock itself. Untested, and the two are annoyingly hard to separate because you cannot easily run docked with the lid open in the same physical position.

  2. User observation

You can partly separate them. Run undocked on AC with the lid closed and an external display on the direct video output, versus docked in the same physical position. Not perfect, but it isolates the dock link from the lid position.

In my experience the closed-lid stand position matters more than the dock, but I have not logged it properly enough to call that a result.
